DISCOURSES

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in

the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  But his delight is in the

law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.  And he shall be

like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;

his leaf also shall not wither and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.    1:1-3

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?  The kings of the

earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and

against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their

cords from us.  He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them

in derision.  Then shall he speak to them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore

displeasure.  Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.   2:1-6

Give ear to my words, 0 LORD, consider my meditation.  Hearken unto the voice of

my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.  My voice shalt thou hear in

the morning, 0 LORD in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look

up.   5:1-3

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars,

which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of

man, that thou visitest him?  For thou hast made him a little lower than the angles,

and hast crowned him with glory and honour.  Thou makest him to have dominion

over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: all sheep and

oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; the foul of the air and the fish of the sea,

and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.   8:3-8

I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not

be moved.  Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall

rest in hope.  For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine

Holy One to see corruption.  Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is

fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.   16:8-11

Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and

were shaken, because he was wroth.  There went up a smoke out of his nostrils,

and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.  He bowed the

heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. And he rode upon a

cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.  He made darkness

his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of

the skies.  At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones

and coals of fire.   18:7-12

It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.  He maketh

my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.  He teacheth my

hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Thou hast also given

me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy

gentleness hath made me great.  Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my

feet did not slip.   18:32-36

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handywork.

Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge.  There is

no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out

through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.  In them hath he set

a tabernacle for the sun, which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and

rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.  His going forth is from the end of the

heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat

thereof.   19:1-6

The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend

thee; send thee help form the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.  Grant thee

according to thine own heart, and fulfill all thy counsel.   20:1-4

The king shall joy in thy strength, 0 LORD; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he

rejoice!  Thou hast given him his heart's desire, and hast not withholden the

request of his lips.  Selah.  For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness:

thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head.  He asked life of thee, and thou

gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.  His glory is great in thy

salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him.  For thou hast made him

most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance.

For the king trusteth in the LORD, and through the mercy of the most High he shall

not be moved.   21:1-7

Lift up your heads, 0 ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King

of glory shall come in.  Who is this King of glory?  The LORD strong and mighty, the

LORD mighty in battle.  Lift up your heads, 0 ye gates; even lift them up, ye

everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.  Who is this King of glory?

The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.   24:7-10

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength

of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?  When the wicked, even mine enemies and my

foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.  Though an host

should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against

me, in this will I be confident.   27:1-3

One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the

house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to

enquire in his temple.  For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in

the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.  And

now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore

will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto

the LORD.   27:3-6

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He

brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet

upon a rock, and established my goings.  And he hath put a new song in my mouth,

even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

40:1-3

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore will not

we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into

the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the

mountains shake with the swelling thereof.  Selah.   46:1-3

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.  From the end of the earth will I cry

unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than

I.  For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.  I will

abide in thy tabernacle for ever.  I will trust in the covert of thy wings.   61:1-4

My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.  He only is my

rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.  In God is my

salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.   62:5-7

Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.  Thus will I

bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.  My soul shall be satisfied

as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: when I

remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.  Because

thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow thy wings will I rejoice.   63:3-7

God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah.

That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.  Let

the people praise thee, 0 God; let all the people praise thee.  0 let the nations be

glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the

nations upon earth.  Selah.  Let the people praise thee, 0 God; let all the people

praise thee.  Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God,

shall bless us. God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.   67

So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.  Nevertheless I am

continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me

with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.  Whom have I in heaven but

thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.  My flesh and my heart

faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.   73:22-26

Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted

it.  Thou preparedst room before it and didst cause it to take deep root, and it

filled the land.  The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs

thereof were like the goodly cedars.  She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her

branches unto the river.   80:8-10

It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name,

0 most, High: to shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness

every night, upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the

harp with a solemn sound.  For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy work: I

will triumph in the works of thy hands.   92:1-4

0 sing unto the LORD a new song; sing unto the LORD, all the earth.  Sing unto the

LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.  Declare his glory

among the heathen, his wonders among all people.   96.1-3

Give unto the LORD, 0 ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and

strength.  Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and

come into his courts.  0 worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before

him, all the earth.   96:7-9

Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the

habitation of his throne.  A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round

about.  His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.  The hills

melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the

whole earth.   97:2-5

0 sing unto the LORD a new song; for the hath done marvelous things: his right

hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.  The LORD hath made known

his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the

ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.   98:1-3

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice,

and sing praise.  Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of

a psalm.  With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD,

the King.  Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell

therein.  Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together before the

LORD.   98:4-9

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.  Serve the LORD with gladness:

come before his presence with singing.  Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he

that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his

pasture.  Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be

thankful unto him, and bless his name.  For the LORD is good; his mercy is

everalsting; and his truth endureth unto all generations.   100

He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our

iniquities.  For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward

them that fear him.  As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed

our transgressions from us.  Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth

them that fear him.   103:10-13

Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments,

hearkening unto the voice of his word.  Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye

ministers of his, that do his pleasure.  Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of

his dominion: bless the LORD, 0 my soul.   103:20-22

0 Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.  0 house of Aaron,

trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.  Ye that fear the LORD, trust in

the LORD: he is their help and their shield.  The LORD hath been mindful of us: he

will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron.  He

will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.   115:9-13

The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me. Return unto

thy rest, 0 my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.  For thou hast

delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

116:6-8

What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?  I will take the

cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.  I will pay my vows unto the

LORD now in the presence of all his people.   116:12-14

When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said

they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them.  The LORD

hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad. 126:1-3

For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation.  This is my

rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.  I will abundantly bless her

provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.  I will also clothe her priests with

salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.   132:13-16

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!  It

is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard; even

Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; as the dew of Hermon,

and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD

commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.   133

The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.  They have

mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; they have ears, but

they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths. They that make them

are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.   135:15-18

All thy works shall praise thee, 0 LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.  They shall

speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power; to make known to the

sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom. Thy kingdom

is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.

145:10-13

Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his

God: which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth

truth for ever: which executeth judgement for the oppressed: which giveth food to

the hungry.  The LORD looseth the prisoners: the LORD openeth the eyes of the

blind; the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous:

the LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the

way of the wicked he tumeth upside down.   146:5-9

Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.  Praise ye him, all

his angles: praise ye him, all his hosts.  Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all

ye stars of light.  Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above

the heavens.   148:1-4

Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps: fire, and hail; snow, and

vapours; stormy wind fulfilling his word: mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and

all cedars; beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl: kings of the

earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth: both young men, and

maidens; old men, and children: let them praise the name of the LORD: for his

name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven.   148:7-13

Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.  Let the high

praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand; to execute

vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; to bind their kings

with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute upon them the

judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.   149:6-9
